Did you know that potato chips were made out of revenge or anger? In the 19th century, French fries came to America and became very popular. French fries were the main dish in many restaurants. And they were called French-style potatoes and were introduced here by a man named George Crum, who was the chef of a restaurant called Moon's Lake House in New York, and his signature dish was Moon's Fried Potatoes. One day, a gentleman named Cornelius Vanderbilt came to that restaurant. Vanderbilt was a famous business magnate of that time. However, he was very picky about food. When Vanderbilt came to that restaurant and ordered fries, Crum served him fries. But Vanderbilt sent the plate back. The fries were too soft and soggy. Crum makes fries again, and Vanderbilt sends them back, saying that they are not crispy enough. This back and forth continues, and then the real story happens. Crum gets very angry, so he goes to the kitchen and starts cutting the potatoes as thin as paper. Then he fries them and takes them to Vanderbilt. But there is a catch. In the 19th century, it was quite rude among high society people to eat something with their hands. And this was George Crum's real trick. Because he knew that the potatoes were so thin that Vanderbilt wondered why anyone could eat them with a fork. But then the trick backfired. Whenever Vanderbilt put potato chips in his mouth, he liked it so much that he started eating them with both hands. And thus, out of revenge or anger, potato chips were born.
