The old beggar hadn't eaten in three
days when a well-dressed teenage boy sat beside him on the bench, pulled out a
burger, and caught him staring.
Hungry. The boy asked, smirk.
3 days without food, Son. The man
said softly.
The boy laughed and threw the burger
straight into the trash can. Dig it out, and I'll give you $50.00.
The man was starving. He walked over
and pulled it out, ate it with shaking hands while the boy filmed him laughing,
then dropped $50 on the ground like trash. The man picked it up quietly and
walked into a nearby store.
Inside, he found a woman whispering
desperately to the cashier, $30 short for her Son's birthday gift. The cashier
turned away without a word. The old man didn't hesitate. He placed all $50.00
in her hand and walked out before she could refuse.
The boy had followed him outside. Grabbed
his shirt roughly outside.
That was my money, give it back, I
don't have it anymore, the man said calmly.
The woman stepped out behind them, with
shopping bags and a hand on Daniel.
The boy froze his mother's face set
ever
I saw the trash can, and I saw the
filming. She handed the shopping bags to the old man. Your birthday gifts and
the $4000 I brought today are all going to him.
Mom, it's my birthday, yes. She said
quietly. The old man gave all the gifts and money to the boy, and walked away. The
boy stood alone on that pavement with nothing left but shame.
